Q.  What is PUSH?

A.   PUSH is a specialized form of muscle therapy designed to relieve chronic and acute pain originating from muscle, tendon, or ligament tension.  Pressure is applied to muscles and soft tissue using a unique and systematic approach that restores blood flow and oxygen to tissue, resulting in long-term structural changes to the body.

There are no preset sessions. The focus of the therapy is based on individual assessment. Once the location and underlying causes of the dysfunction are identified, a personalized treatment plan is developed.

Q.  What is included in the PUSH system?

A.   The PUSH system includes:

  • Unique methods for relieving chronic or acute pain while i mproving the long-term function and structure of the body

  • Patient education about how muscles tighten and release, the PUSH Therapy postures, and PUSH Therapy

  • The PUSH Treatment Plan; a customized treatment plan with specific components to maximize a patient’s progress

  • Education to help patients increase physical self-awareness

Q.  Is PUSH just for athletes?

A.  While many professional athletes receive PUSH Therapy for pain relief and performance improvement, PUSH treatments can benefit anyone who suffers from chronic pain.  PUSH Therapy patients range from teenagers to the elderly, and from the highly athletic to the very sedentary.

Q.  Is PUSH like physical therapy?

A.  While some of the goals are the same and the therapies can be highly complementary, the modalities are different.  PUSH Therapy’s focus is on lengthening and loosening tight, contracted, rigid tissue by applying pressure to specific areas of concern as well as to associated large muscle groups.  The goal is to relieve pain, improve muscle tone, and change the physical structure of the body.  Physical therapy, in general, focuses on building strength in specific areas and using ultrasound and stretching to loosen tissue.

Q.  Is it like chiropractic treatments?

A.  PUSH does not attempt to directly manipulate the skeletal system. PUSH is based on the laws of anatomy and physiology, which state that muscles move the bones of the body. Once the body’s muscles are returned to normal structure and function, the skeletal system naturally falls into alignment, achieving sustainable benefits.

Q.  Is PUSH a type of massage?

A.  No.  The PUSH techniques and goals are very different from massage. PUSH is a system of manual muscle therapy and patient education, which is based on the structural anatomy and physiology of the body.  While massage can create a pleasant feeling of relaxation and stress relief, the goal of PUSH is to change the soft-tissue structure of the body so that long-term improvements in function, performance, and pain relief are achieved.

Q.  Will I need to disrobe?

A.  No. PUSH treatments are applied with the patient fully clothed. We recommend that patients wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweatpants, cotton t-shirts, etc. Heavy clothing or clothing with thick seams, such as jeans, is not recommended.

Q.  How long is a typical session?

A. PUSH sessions typically last about one hour. Sessions may be shorter or longer, depending on the area(s) being treated and the condition of the patient.

Q.  Is PUSH Therapy available in other areas?

A.  Yes.  While the PUSH Therapy Center is where PUSH was founded, Certified PUSH Therapists can be found in many areas of the United States.  Feel free to contact us and we will help you to find the nearest therapist.

Q.  Does PUSH Therapy have any contraindications?

A.  Manual muscle therapies, including PUSH Therapy, have indications and contraindications which cannot be entirely imparted online, however, PUSH is not recommended if any of the following currently apply to you: bone fractures, bone spurs, open skin lesions, severe osteoporosis, 3rd trimester of pregnancy, recent surgery, slipped ribs, torn soft tissue (muscles, tendons, or ligaments), or any kind of cancer in which mobilization of the lymphatic system may contribute to metastases. Please see our disclaimer for additional information.
